The Instagram vibe video I shot and directed for Stellar Dust Resort Wear was inspired by visuals from 80’s Playboy magazines and 80’s swimsuit calendars. I straight love the aesthetic of the bikini-clad beach babe any red-blooded man of the 80’s enjoyed gazing at. I wanted this to be an unabashed celebration of the beauty of the female form and mens appreciation of it. Don’t pretend you’re above enjoying sexy things. Indulge and enjoy it.

To achieve this look, I wanted her wet against the backdrop of the setting sun. The camera would capture her on a long lens, as if discovering her by happenstance.

My approach was to reduce the color palette to blend the environment and swimsuit together. Sunset was the ideal time for this as the sky transformed from bright blue during the day to a light lavender, similar to the cool grey of the one piece.

The lavender color was contrasted by the fleeting orange sunset, necessary to reflect the warmth of summer. An entirely cool color palette wouldn’t lend itself towards the idea of paradise.

I filmed this using a Sony A7iii mounted on a Zhiyun Crane 2 gimbal, with a mixture of different prime lenses.

The wide shots were shot on a 24 mm to establish location and give the viewer a sense of the space, and to show the receding lines of the pier.

Then I jumped on an 85 mm to really bring our model, Emary Simon, out from the background, traipsing through the sand.

The big trick here was to keep the camera just below her eyeline to transform it from simply a pedestrian shooting video, to images that begin to feel cinematic and elavated.

Let’s talk about the ass shot.

This shot was designed to bring us closer to the textures of everything; the smoothness of the suit, the goose bumps of her skin, and the flow of the water all combined into one image.

Not to mention just getting a great shot of a nice ass.

Asses seem to be everywhere these days, but even in this video, I wanted it to feel more 80’s and less 2020 Instagram ass shot.
